The effect of external-focus using a paper balloon on the activity of upper limb and trunk muscles during static and dynamic tasks

BACKGROUND: External focus isometric exercises using a paper balloon can change trunk muscle activation in the chest squeeze; however, it is unknown whether this method affects activities conventional exercises. OBJECTIVE: To check variations of activity during front plank (static task) and shoulder press (dynamic both with without instruction to avoid crushing an object. METHODS: Twenty-six healthy adult males aged 19–49 were recruited. Ten measured surface electromyography dynamic exercises, external-focus instruction. RESULTS: Adding significantly activated 8 out 10 muscles. In downward press, 5 muscles 50% 1 RM, 2 100% RM activated. CONCLUSIONS: increases while possibly improving stability. Novel may efficiently activate specific external loading thus reducing stress on involved joints exercise.
